Newport functions both as space divider and acoustic element.
To create space within a space, that was the task. Those bare rooms that you now see everywhere had just started to become popular with architects. What was needed was a piece of upholstered furniture that could function both as space divider and acoustic element. The banana shape was the obvious one – place two of these opposite each other and you’ve created a psychological space. We tried out other possible arrangements with the help of little models that we then photographed in a doll’s house. Those pictures had the bosses at Lammhults cheering. They ordered two versions, high and low backed, for two and three people respectively. Both are still in production. The need for seclusion has hardly diminished since then.
